This week we read Act 1 scenes 2 and 3 in The Merchant of Venice.  Our lecture this week was about the different kinds of plays.  Shakespeare wrote 4 different kinds: Histories, tragedies, comedies, and problem plays.

Week 2: Shakespeare

In class we started reading the Merchant of Venice.  We read Act I Scene 1.  If you were absent please read this on your own this week.  We also learned about Shakespeare himself. 


-He was likely born on April 23, 1564.  He died on April 23, 1616 at the age of 52

-Stratford-upon-Avon is the town where he was born and where he is buried. Located in England on the banks of the river Avon.




-Parents: John Shakespeare and Mary Arden.




-He married Anne Hathway in November 1582. He was 18 and she was 26!




-They had 3 children.  Daughter 6 months after marriage and twins 2 years later.


-Grave:

"Good friend, for Jesus' sake forebeare, To digg the dust enclosed heare; Bleste be the man that spares thes stones, And curst be he that moves my bones."




-Some Believe he didn’t author all of his work.

-Invented Many First Names: Jessica(The Merchant of Venice) Olivia(Twelth Night) Miranda(The Tempest)

-Shakespeare used 15,000 words in his plays, some of them he invented himself by merging existing words.

Week 1: The Man, William Shakespeare

Welcome to Shakespeare Class of 2019-2020!  Today we went over class rules and what it takes to complete the Shakespeare Conquest.  We did vocabulary and presentation sign-ups.  Everyone received a new Shakespearian name.  Start working on reading/watching/listening to Shakespeare’s plays.  Remember to talk to your parents before you start.  I sent them an email so you know where to start.  Please bring your binders next week!
